Stories

In students' words, and then a few of Jaya's.

  • I had never sung in front of anyone. A few lessons in, I realised I had never really breathed either. After all these years of being human, I finally know how to breathe. The singing came after that.

    Beginner, online

  • I had years of lessons and a voice that still tightened on the high notes. Jaya did not add anything. She took the pushing away. Every breath opens me up now.

    Trained singer

  • I only wanted to sound good at karaoke. We hardly touched the voice. We worked on the breath, and the voice sorted itself out.

    Karaoke singer

  • I sing most nights, and by the end of a set I used to feel spent. Now the breath comes back between the phrases on its own, and I still have something left when I walk off.

    Professional singer

  • When Jaya sings the mantras, the sense of presence is so strong. When I sing them with her, the whole state is different. It's opened, it's opened.

    Student, in class

  • I came for the breathing, not the singing. After two lessons, my whole being felt set free.

    Student, online

  • I was scared of singing, and Jaya simply let me be scared. We went at my pace, and one day I heard my own voice and found I liked it.

In Jaya's words

  • When you forget to breathe, your rhythm rushes and your voice floats up and loses its ground.

  • Welcome every breath. Let's take it slowly.
